Background

The Nevada Irrigation District uses Glyphosate- and copper-based herbicides to manage 350 miles of their 475 mile raw water canal system.

  • Roundup is sprayed along unlined ditch banks and berms year-round, and inside de-watered canals between October 15th – April 15th (the off-irrigation season)
  • Algaecides such as Captain, Nautique, and Cutrine Ultra are dripped directly into the water throughout the irrigation season

Goals

CEA Foundation has partnered with Safe Ditches in order to protect the health and safety of the public, agriculture, and the environment from negative impacts of herbicide use on raw water distribution systems. We are working to provide tools for the community to learn about these herbicides and to receive notification when they are being applied. At the same time we are advocating for the reduction or elimination of the use of herbicides.
